On first impressions the Stylus SX200 seems to be yet another budget multifunction printer from Epson, but the SX200 is slightly different because its actual affordable not just to buy but to run as well. A set of Epson SX200 ink cartridges cost around £30 and if you buy compatible Epson ink cartridges then the costs are halved. Affordable printer cartridges are not the only thing the SX200 has going for it however, it also delivers on performance too. The SX200 is basically three machines in one and its amazingly compact consider this fact, it’s a printer scanner and copier and performs well in all of these roles. The scanner interface software is easy to navigate and the quality of scans the SX200 produces are accurately coloured with good contrast and no graininess. The copier produces accurate copies of the original document and work without the need for a PC to be connected but it is a little limited by the fact that you can only make nine copies at a time. Printing is definitely the SX200 strongest point with its high 5760 x 1440dpi resolution print quality is one of the best in its class. The SX200 can print on a wide variety of media including various sizes of envelopes photo paper and of course standard office papers. Every printer has a weakness and the SX200’s weakest point is its printing speed. Its not so much that its slower than it competitors more that the spec sheet claims it is capable of 34ppm and this is a totally unrealistic figure and in reality its only capable of 4ppm in a reasonable quality setting. Despite this the Stylus SX200 is still a great all-round value for money device.
